yay a new blog

December 23rd, 2005

I thought I’d consolidate my postings to one place on my own site. I’ve kept a travel blog here and sort of a geeky blog about programming and why I’m pulling my hair out on any given day here. So, from now on, anything that would have been on either of those blogs will now be here. Now I’m going to get to work and try to make it look like the rest of my site :-/. Anyhoo, hopefully this will give me a kick in the ass and get me posting more.

Pictures

December 23rd, 2005

I Finally went through all of my pictures and picked out the good ones. I found a really cool and easy to use program that generated photo album pages called jAlbum. It’s freeware and has no spyware. I’m going to Australia so I’ll put those up when I get back. Gooday!

Made it to Sydney

December 29th, 2005

small group pic in sydneyWe landed in Sydney today and its weird because it’s hot and we missed a whole day because of the time change. Our hotel seems pretty nice, although it should be interesting trying to fit everyone in it. We almost got attacked by a dinosaur bird when we went to get fish and chips. Phil’s getting here in a couple hours, so we can start getting warmed up for the new years party :D LaTer

happy new years

December 31st, 2005

happy new years!Ha ha, we win. For all you back in yesterday, have a great new years! We went and saw the fireworks at the Sydney Harbor, which was amazing. They had like three separate shows in the same area that were all in sync with eachother. There were tons of people everywhere. Today we’re headed downtown again to look around some more.

The Sunshine Coast

January 5th, 2006

is just that. It’s hOt. But it’s also really nice. Yesterday we went to Steve Irwin’s (Crocodile Hunter) zoo. They have mostly Australian animals like kangaroos, wambats, koalas, etc. but also had some tigers, cheetahs and elephants. We saw a really great corocodile show where the trainers would dangle meat in front of the thing. It was crazy how big it was when it came out because all you could see of it when it was in the water was the top of it’s head. All of a sudden this massive dinosaur lookin’ thing lunges out that’s like 15 feet long.
kangaroos are soft
Last night Sunshine’s family and some of Phil and Sunshine’s friends came over for bbq and beer. It was a good time, and we got some good tips about where to go for some hiking. We were supposed to go surfing early this morning but Jeff and I were a little hung over. On the up and up, though, Jeff found his wallet. Or rather, we now know that the bus station has it in Sydney. It sounds like there might even still be some cash in it :D So thats good.

Aussie pictures and Glasshouse Mnts

January 6th, 2006

I put up Christina’s pictures of Sydney and our trip to the zoo here. We had a great hike today in the Glasshouse mountains. top of mount beer-something-or-otherThe beginning was pretty much straight up and was really more of a rock climb than a hike. After about 45 min. of that the trail turned into more of a walk but was still steep as all hell. The view at the top was crazy good though and it was actually pretty fun to come down (the old butt slide technique still works great :) ). Next week we’re headed to the Great Barrier Reef and Fraser Island which are both around two hours north of here. Everyone has been really helpful in trying to find us deals, places to stay and fun stuff to do, so I’m sure it will be a good time. Laters.

Party, reef, fraser island

January 12th, 2006

another picture not to be proud ofIt’s been a long last few days. We went to a miami themed party that we were all a little over (well under really) dressed for. Some dude was dressed up as a Chips cop… (apperently when your this far away anything american will do) Anyway, a day or two later we went to the town 1770 and took a boat to an island in the great barrier reef which was just amazing. we saw lots of fish and a sea turtle. There were these ginormous clam things that probably could take a hand (or worse!), but luckily there weren’t any eels. Jeff and I got sunburnt pretty bad snorkeling all day. Phil has at least a whole show of crocodile hunter show impression around that, mating calls and all :/.
cool shipwreck!
The next day, we drove down to frasier island and rented a 4×4. We saw an old shipwreck and went to Eli Creek (ha ha!). The whole island is basically a big sand dune covered in forest. We went toMakenzey Lake which was really cool. The water is crystal clear. Phil claims you can drink it (didn’t try it though:)) and the sand looks perfectly white. There are supposed to be a bunch of dingoes, but all we saw was a big-ass lizzard. Now we’re back and looking forward to some relaxing days at the beach and surfing.

Back home

January 19th, 2006

It’s good to be home after a total of 20 hours flying (as well as waiting in airports). After all that, we got home almost right when we left, so we got the day we lost back. My body is completely confused as to what time it is so work should be interesting the next couple of days.

another app launch

January 27th, 2006

well two actually, and both via download squad. SlickRun was the first, but you have to add your own shortcuts and I had a bunch of problems with settings being persistant after restarts. Colibri seems much better in my limited use - it feels a lot like quicksilver as DLSquad said.

It’s also pretty light at ~15mb memory. Changing the hot key didn’t work when I tried (I like ALT-Space), but the CTRL-Space works well enough . Other cool things: system volume control, google searches, and it looks like itunes intigration is coming soon. So far, I like this better than AppRocket, which I purchased a few months ago.
